The realities of a very dirty war
Eric Waugh writing in the Belfast telegraph, puts some prospective on this week’s official report on security forces’ collusion with terrorists.
The key point, which I tend to agree with, is:
It is in the light of history, and the stresses of the time, that the Ombudsman’s report should be read. Now, after a decent pause, we should move on. Every wallow in the tainted past weakens the appetite for shared Government.
-The realities of a very dirty war
The conflict in Northern Ireland was indeed a dirty little war. A war in which all sides emerged with plenty of blood on their hands. But now it is time to move on and put the past behind us. Part of why the Troubles occurred in the first place was because people can never forget the past in Northern Ireland. In their minds they were fighting the same battles their forefathers fought 400 years ago. The goal now should be peace, and only peace. We should not let the ghosts of the past destroy our future.
