If the focus is purely on eradicating Al Qaeda, then I have little disagreement. It’s when the war on terror goes off on pointless tangents like in Iraq, that I have problems with.

It doesn’t get much media attention, but American forces have been quite active in the Horn of Africa region training local forces and doing hearts and minds stuff like building roads and clinics. The American special forces have been active in small numbers inside Somalia trying to build alliances with various Warlords and nabbing the occasional terrorist.

They were also involved in training the Ethiopian army. Given what has been happening in recent weeks, it seems to have paid off.
