Northern Ireland’s dirty little war

It’s all water under the bridge now and the time for recrimination has long since passed, but I believe it should be noted for the historical record that the British government did engage in collusion with loyalist terrorists.

Fighting terror with terror by backing one side against the other I don’t necessarily have a problem with. I see it as a legitimate tactic if it results in more dead terrorists. But when innocent civilians become the casualties and the British government let the situation continue as long as it did, then it’s an entirely different matter.

Of course war is never a simple matter and civilians will inevitably end up being casualties. But in this case civilians were actively and deliberately targeted along side terrorists. Like I said, it’s all in the past now and hopefully we will never again have to revisit a similar situation.
