Poles Flock to Irish Job Fair

Polish people now make up 5% of the working population in Ireland. 150,000 Poles have left their home country to seek work in Ireland since we opened our labour market to members of the new EU states in 2004.

It’s a rather surreal situation for those of us old enough to remember back to the dark days of the 1980’s when unemployment was at 20% and Ireland was the one exporting it’s labour force to other countries.

For the moment of course, Poland is a relatively poor nation. But when it’s time eventually comes, Poland will no doubt be the next ‘Celtic Tiger’ of Europe.
