Unions for Techies?
5 years ago, I would have been uncomfortable with the idea of unions in IT. But in the current era of stagnant wages, increasing demands on productivity, zero job security and outsourcing, perhaps it’s time tech workers fought back.
There is a strong institutional prejudice among tech workers against unions. Unions have had an adverse effect on professsions like teaching. But the way IT has gone downhill in the last few years, we’re probably fucked either way.
Perhaps a representative body or lobby group like what other professionals have might be the way to go. It works well enough for doctors and lawyers.
