War on Terrorism Stats

The National Counterterrorism Center recently released its annual report on terrorist incidents around the world.

Among the highlights:

  1. 11,000 terrorist attacks occurred in 2005, resulting in 14,500 deaths.
  2. Approximately 40000 people worldwide were killed or wounded. At least 10-15000 of which were Muslim (mostly in Iraq)
  3. Top 5 countries by fatality: Iraq, India, Columbia, Afghanistan, Thailand.
  4. Iraq accounted for 30% of the worldwide attacks and 55% of the fatalities - about 8,300 people died from terrorist attacks in Iraq last year. Attacks on noncombatants in Iraq increased “significantly” in 2005. “High fatality” terrorist attacks in Iraq more than doubled from 2004 to 2005.
  5. 80 Mosques were attacked mostly by radical extremists

Overall the number of terrorist attacks appear to have increased. Although this is in part due to the more comprehensive reporting methodolgy used in the latest report.

Last years report also showed an increase terrorist incidents, which undermined the Bush administrations claim they were “winning” the war against terrorism.
